What Schools Get Wrong About Teen Girl Leadership Programs

By Ka'Cheena  ·  Becoming Her Within

Schools and youth organizations care deeply about supporting teen girls.

That’s not the issue.

The issue is that many leadership and wellness programs are built with good intentions — but expectations that don’t match how real growth actually happens.

1. Expecting one program to solve everything

One of the biggest misunderstandings is the belief that a single program can “fix” confidence, behavior, or emotional challenges.

Growth doesn’t work like that.

Group programming can create powerful shifts — but it is not a replacement for deeper, ongoing, or individualized support when it’s needed.

When we expect one experience to do everything, we set both the program and the girls up for disappointment.

2. Keeping things too surface-level

Many programs focus on motivation, inspiration, or “feel-good” messaging.

But teen girls need more than that.

They need space to process real emotions, explore identity, and talk about what’s actually happening in their lives.

Without that depth, the impact doesn’t last.

"You can’t build real confidence from surface-level conversations."

3. Talking at girls instead of involving them

Another common mistake is treating programs like presentations instead of experiences.

When girls are being talked at instead of engaged, they disconnect.

Real growth happens when they are part of the conversation — when they’re reflecting, sharing, and actively engaging in the process.

4. Using a one-size-fits-all approach

Teen girls are not all at the same developmental stage — emotionally, socially, or mentally.

Programs that don’t take that into account often miss the mark.

What resonates with one group may not resonate with another.

Effective programming meets girls where they actually are — not where we assume they should be.

What actually works

From my experience working with teen girls over the years, what creates real impact is:

  • Consistency — not one-time exposure
  • Emotional regulation tools they can actually use
  • Relevant conversations that reflect their real experiences
  • Interactive environments where they feel safe to participate
  • Programs that prioritize both group connection and individual growth

When these elements are in place, you don’t just see temporary engagement — you see lasting change.

Looking for a program that goes deeper?

Becoming Her Within helps schools and youth organizations support teen girls through confidence-building, emotional regulation, identity development, and leadership skills that actually connect to their lives.
